This morning, Vizio announced a brand new line of 4K UHD TVs, the 2016 P Series. This new line of TVs are the direct successors to the 2014 Vizio P Series and feature a new smart control system called SmartCast.

The 2016 P Series is available to buy right now in four sizes:

• 50-inch (P50-C1), MSRP: $999 • 55-inch (P55-C1), MSRP: $1,299 • 65-inch (P65-C1), MSRP: $1,999 • 75-inch (P75-C1), MSRP: $3,799

I got to spend some time with the new P Series TVs recently, and discussed the lineup with some of Vizio's top people. According to Vizio CTO Matt McRae, the new P Series benefits from the trickling down of picture quality enhancements developed for the company's flagship Reference Series.

The new SmartCast UI is also a major step forward, and it was the highlight of my time with the TVs. In its most basic form, SmartCast is an app that control your Vizio TV directly from a compatible smartphone or tablet. Users will be able to do things like adjust picture settings, search content across streaming services, and cast movies/TV shows directly to the TV all from a single piece of software.

SmartCast allows you to control every aspect of the TV—from picture settings to streaming apps—from a second screen device like a smartphone or tablet.

It's a marked departure from the usual smart TV experience, as it does away with the longstanding middle-man of sluggish in-TV processing, third party firmware updates, and hit-or-miss second screen compatibility. Best of all, Vizio is including a SmartCast tablet in the box with the new P Series TVs—so you don't need a separate device just to use the app.

I went hands-on with the new P Series and SmartCast functionality during a private event with Vizio in NYC. Check out my first impressions of the P65-C1—or just head over to Vizio's website if you're already looking to pick one up.
