—The press conference has started. We're waiting for the first product announcements.
UHD TVs are going to be big this year, and not just 4K.
—Big news for UHD enthusiasts: Sharp will be showing off an 85-inch 8K (yep, 8K) LED TV at its CES 2014 booth.
—Sharp is showing us videos of consumers talking about what features are most important in a HDTV. Size seems to be the most common theme.
—During 'The Art of Amazing, a 4K Film Competition,' Sharp asked filmmakers how access to 4K resolution has changed the way they express themselves through their art. Their creations will be displayed at the Sharp CES 2014 booth.
1080p is still going strong.
—Aquos HD offers a line of entry-level HDTVs.
—This year, Sharp will be offering the Aquos 4K, which will feature its Revelation 4K upscaling engine.
—Sharp Aquos Q is the company's four-subpixel technology, which has been more commonly known as Quattron.
—Confusing things further, the new Sharp Aquos Quattron+ is Quattron technology (four subpixels instead of three) plus its Revelation 4K upscaler.
—The TVs that were shown today will be available in a matter of weeks, according to an executive.
—Aquos HD is an all-1080p series that will continue in 2014. These TVs will include the company's all-new SmartCentral 3, and offer a 120Hz native panel refresh rate.
—The Sharp Aquos Q+ is actually a 1080p panel, but it apparently can show UHD content (presumably through downscaling). It will be available for half of the price of 4K TVs. There will be two lines: SQ and UQ. SQ will be 3D ready, and UQ will have an all-aluminum frame and super-bright technology. UQ is the higher-end version.
—These models will be available in 60-, 70-, and 80-inch sizes. All of them will ship in March.
—The Sharp Aquos 4K Ultra HD TV is the company's flagship product this year. It includes the first-ever THX 4K certification, and will also include HDMI 2.0 and HEVEC technology.
—A Sharp executive claims that most competing 4K TVs are more than three times the price of the Sharp Aquos 4K.
Smart TV Tweaks
—Sharp Central is the company's smart TV platform. It features its own apps, as well as phone and tablet connectivity. It can learn your preferences and how you find content, and sounds like it will also integrate cable content and streaming platforms like Netflix. It will allow users to search across platforms to find the content that they want to watch. This sounds similar to what LG and Samsung announced last year.
—Sharp Central allows you to search, change channels, adjust volume, and tweak picture settings with an app that's available for both iOS and Android.
Sharp Universal Player
—Sharp's Universal Player is the first to offer wireless high fidelity sound using the WiSA standard. It can transmit 24-bit audio at a sampling rate of 96kHz. Sharp's Universal Player will ship in late spring.
