We all love the dark, cozy intimacy of the movie theater experience, and yes, it’s great to have a special night now again where we turn off the lights at home and cuddle up with a movie.

But most people’s lives don’t offer the luxury of a proper “movie night” every night of the week. Instead, we fold laundry while we watch TV. We catch up on e-mail and social media. And of course, there’s all that TV we watch during the day—Sunday afternoon football games and early morning car races.

The fact of the matter is that, even if we wanted to, most TV watching doesn’t happen in perfect darkness. So why would you base a TV’s performance on how well it does in a dark room?

In the past, plasma TVs were praised for their deep black levels. In the last few years as plasma TVs have gone extinct, OLED TVs have replaced them as kings of the dark home theater. Both are fantastic, but both only truly excel in darkened home theater environments.

In brighter rooms, LED TVs—particularly those utilizing quantum dot technology—have a distinct advantage. Today's LED TVs with quantum dot are able to achieve far brighter displays than today's OLEDs. The brighter the TV, the better it can compete against the ambient light of ceiling lights or a sunny window.

A brighter screen doesn’t just mean whiter whites, either. Remember that color is light. The real breakthrough of the quantum dot technology is that it can leverage that brightness to create more and richer colors than ever before.

What does this mean for you? Simple, it means that when you’re busy folding socks and trying to catch up on some binge-worthy TV at the same time, you won’t miss an iota of detail.
