Roku is known as one of the leaders in the content-streaming set-top box market, but now it's going after actual TV displays. At CES 2014, the company announced plans to make actual Roku TVs, partnering with manufacturers Hisense and TCL.
According to a blog post by Roku CEO Anthony Wood, the Roku TV will have all the same features as its eponymous content-streaming platform, but instead of requiring a separate Roku box, only the TV set is needed. The company hopes to further streamline the process of getting content by shipping a redesigned remote, which Roku claims has only 20 total buttons—half the number of many traditional remotes.
Even with its foray into the display market, Roku will continue to make streaming boxes like the Roku 3. Roku TVs ranging from 32 to 55 inches will be available this fall. No pricing information has been released yet.
