LG Unveils Double-Sided, Tri-Folding OLED Display

The future is all OLED

At today's keynote address from IFA Berlin, LG Display CEO Sang-Beom Han spent more than an hour laying out the argument for OLED, with multiple (live and pre-taped) guest appearances including everyone from the father of OLED, Professor Ching W Tang, to Sir Ridley Scott.

But what really wowed the crowd was the unveiling of a giant, double-sided OLED screen called Vertically Tiling Display, which appeared to fold into thirds—almost like a room divider screen. Very few details are available for the moment, as this is only a demo model.

It's important to note that this is not a television. LG Display is a separate company from LG Electronics, which assembles, markets, and sells actual televisions under the LG brand. LG Display, on the other hand, makes the OLED and LCD panels for several TV brands, as well as commercial displays, watches, and more.

Any success that OLED currently enjoys is due in large part to LG Display. The tech took nearly 20 years to develop, and as such, LG Display is eager to get it into any viable corner of the market.

It can be used as a signage product, a video wall, or a show window. [There are] many, many areas for application."

The behemoth measures 110 inches diagonally is actually three 65-inch OLED panels "stitched" together. "Hardware-wise, it's really not that difficult," Kim added. "You just need to know how to configure it."

LG showed off double-sided displays earlier this year in Korea, but this was the first time it was demoed in front of a global audience. "You might see a very thick LCD double-sided panel, but that's too heavy [for] normal usage," said Kim. He believes that OLED is the future of double-sided displays.

While LCDs are the dominant display technology by a huge margin, LG Display hopes that the unique benefits of OLED—both its performance and its malleability—will lead to a brighter future.
