LG Electronics recently announced that select OLED models would soon support playback of High Dynamic Range (HDR) content. Today, the company is doubling down, revealing the first source of honest-to-goodness HDR: Amazon Instant Video.

Both the flat LG EF9500 (which just recently hit retail) and the curved EG9600 are compatible, and can receive HDR content via the Amazon app that's already built into the webOS smart platform.

The only drawback? There's just not much HDR content to be had yet. In fact, Amazon's Mozart in the Jungle, Transparent, and Red Oaks are just about the only HDR content you can get right now.

But with more HDR content headed to streaming services later this year, it's still welcome news. The HDR format promises stunning TV picture quality via increased brightness, better shadow depth, and enhanced color.

LG's recently announced, HDR-compatible EF9500 flat OLED TV can now stream Amazon Instant's HDR content.

Though the world of HDR is still a bit of a Wild West, the reach of streaming services like Amazon Instant Video should mean HDR content will be widely available before you know it. And while the industry has spent much of the last year rallying around 4K UHD, HDR may actually provide the leap in picture quality needed to get people to upgrade.

That still remains to be seen, of course. But with every major player hopping on the HDR bandwagon, it won't take too long to find out.
