One of the most legendary names in the world of home audio has returned.

Panasonic announced that it would be applying the Technics name to a lineup of high-end audio equipment, including reference systems with price tags that match the window sticker on a luxury sedan.

It's a comeback that audiophiles have been waiting for. In the '60s and '70s, Technics competed alongside the likes of Marantz, Harman/Kardon, and Nakamichi. The Technics SL-1200 turntable became a staple in DJ booths back in the disco era, and eventually led to the rise of hip-hop.

While turntables aren't in the upcoming product lineup, we do know what's coming when the brand relaunches in December.

The Reference Class R1 includes a network player with integrated pre-amp, power amplifier, and speaker system, and should cost north of $50,000. The Premium Class C700 will include speakers, an integrated amp, a network player, and (eventually) a CD player. The whole package is expected to retail for more than $5,000.
