Cons
About one month after buying this TV it started to randomly reset itself. Whether I was in the middle of a movie, TV show, or playing video games, it would randomly shut down, and restart. The boot up process for this TV takes about 20 seconds, so to be interrupted that long while in the middle of something can be incredibly frustrating. It leaves you scrambling for your remote to pause what you were in the middle of, and hopefully be where you were when the TV shut off. Sometimes this will only happen every couple of hours, or sometimes as often as 3 times in a ten minute span. But without a doubt, it happens everytime I use the TV. Incredibly frustrating.
Sometimes after the TV will reset it becomes unresponsive. What's on the screen will still continue, but volume, power, and any function using the remote or button on the TV would yield no results. The only fix I found would be to unplug the TV, and power cycle it by holding down the power button for fifteen seconds.
The Youtube app. Sometimes instead of resetting, the TV will decide it wants to open the Youtube app no matter what you were in the middle of. The screen will turn gray, and take about 10 seconds to pop up the Youtube logo.
The menu on the TV is quite slow, and clunky. It gets the job done, but inputting anything is a bit of a slog.
PS4 Pro; this will only effect a small group of people I'm sure, but if you have a PS4 Pro and looking to take advantage of 4k gaming, I would not recommend the Vizio brand. I did not know until I received my Pro a couple weeks ago that after the 4.5 patch the Pro was having trouble with Vizio, and LG TVs. Instead of 4k gaming I was introduced to a 'No signal" message. It wasn't until I booted the Pro is safe mode, and disabled 4k features that it worked. Of course this kind of defeated the purpose of having a 4k TV in the first place.
Before this TV became the bain of my existence it was actually pretty good! I was going to write a list of pros, but seeing the TV reset in front of me twice in the ten minutes this review has taken, leaves me unmotivated to do so. Unfortunately the problems started after the return policy expired, so I'll be stuck with this lemon for the foreseeable future. There are plenty of other reviews with the pros, and if you decide to buy this TV I hope you have better luck than I have. It's been nothing but frustration, and hours of research have yielded no fix for the problems I have.
From where I stand there is some color fade in the corners. But that is only because if the close viewing angle. When standing a little further back the color and clarity are really nice. There are a lot of tuning options for setting the color too.
I had to get a new bluray player for the computer. Something about 4k playback. But it worked too. Sound also. I set the computer to send raw sound data and set the tv to Bitstream and my receiver is playing the results in full surround properly.
I like that the tv is wifi and come with the Netflix app.
I've read not to do competitive gaming because of the slight timing difference between input and visual response. But I haven't seen that yet. And I'm not a competitive gamer though I have run a game or two on this monitor already.
Top reviews from other countries
The 4K is super crisp, with fantastic blacks and contrast (after a few tweaks of the settings).
Lots of HDMI inputs (5 - unusual, as many Samsung and SONY TV's only have 3 or 4!), with one dedicated to 4K sources!
I have been researching many of the 'high-end' brands, both in the stores, and in many online reviews. I didn't want to spend more than $1200 on an HDTV, so didn't spend much of that time looking at their high end lines, other than to see the major differences between medium and high end models.
I had seen the Visio units in Best Buy, and was impressed with the picture quality, but wondered how the reliability would be. When I saw this 50" 4K on Amazon for less than $800, I was thrilled to say the least, especially with free shipping! I took care of my reliability concerns by purchasing the 4 yr warranty extension for only a hundred bucks, bringing the total cost still way below the alternatives!
I have not had any noticeable lag or blurring of fast action (which is the main feature of more expensive models), so I am very pleased with this Visio UHDTV!
Cheers.
The reason I chose this one is due to very low input lag. I game a lot via PC and PS4 and wanted something that would give me just that. I bought a GTX 1070 to be able to push my games in 2K+. For movies and such though I find it slightly lacking. The picture quality is fantastic don't get me wrong. But after seeing the competitions screens and how crisp the colors are I can definitely see where this TV is lacking. Except this TV is almost $400 cheaper than the next best if not more so take that into some serious consideration because the difference is hardly there for most people.
The BIGGEST con for this TV as noted in almost every review is the viewing angle. I can't really explain it well but you really have to be facing this TV directly and I mean straight on. If you move slightly to the left or right. You will lose a lot of your color and it gives the TV an almost cloudy white look. It's like the colors of the TV cannot seem to show on an angle and this is a HUGE issue for anyone that has a large sitting area and has chairs and such facing the TV from the side as it can ruin your 4k experience.
PROS:
Low input lag for gaming.
Crisp picture quality
Low priced.
Strong build quality.
Good cable management to do side and downward facing ports.
CONS:
60hz panel claiming 120hz which it is not!
Horrible viewing angle from looking from the side.
Blacks on this TV are a bit light and not a nice deep dark compared to others.
Overall I'd recommend to this TV to Gamers and first time 4K UHD tv buyer. If you want an immersive 4K experience when watching your favourite 4k nature show or that well shot movie such as The Revenant. I'd say to see if you can get a better deal on a more expensive model as this TV is slightly less than what I wanted for that but as said for gaming it's perfect.
I purchased this after reading a review about a similar model (the Vizio D50u-D2, instead of the -D1) in Wirecutter.com for a cheap 4k monitor to be used as a PC monitor for work and games.
It has an excellent latency for gaming, while in it's easily accessible Gaming picture mode.
As for most of my impulse buys, I learned about the cons of this TV after the purchase, but none were deal breakers.
I'll let you judge (but I'm still very happy about this TV, for the price paid):
- 4K 60 fps is 4:2:0 chroma. Not a problem for anything with motion, but has an effect on color text while using as a PC display;
- 4K 30 fps is 4:2:2 chroma. A good compromize (I hear the issue is mainly that a 4K 60 fps DHCP 2.x compliant HDMI chipset aren't yet available with 4:4:4 chroma capabilities, so this would be a compromise for most, if not all current generation 4K TVs);'
- Color gamut isn't the most extreme, but the color accuracy, under it's "Calibrated" or "Calibrated Dark" seems very nice out of the box (personal preference);
- Viewing angle is a little narrow. While sitting at about 3-4 feet from the screen, I see the edges of the screen with a slightly different color and brightness, but again, when playing games, the focus is really mostly in the center, so not a problem. While using it as a PC screen for work, it hasn't been a real issue either, even though you'll notice it if doing picture editing or graphics art with uniform color patches across the screen mostly. Otherwise, I don't usually notice it;
- Living in Canada, I noticed that the Amazon Prime Video app wasn't available (not pre-installed, nor available from their app store). I reconfigured the TV telling it I was in the USA, and it was pre-installed. It allows for UHD (4K) content to be streamed from it;
- Netflix was available under either the Canadian or US configuration. Again, it displayed UHD streams with no problem;
- YouTube is limited to 1080p. From what I've read, it's a licensing issue (they didn't pay for the right to integrate the UHD codec). But when connected to a PC, there is no issue, my PC can stream those resolutions, so it's an acceptable compromise for me. If you'd expect to rely solely on the YouTube app on the TV, you're out of luck for UHD;
- Only it's HDMI 5 input can do 4K at 60 fps. This may be an issue if you want more than one UHD set top box, computer, console or streaming device to connect at the full TV's capabilities;
- Not directly related to the TV, but worth knowing: I learned that Amazon Prime (and Netflix as well, I believe, but check for yourself for the later) is now limited to streaming at a maximum of only 1080p when streamed from a browser interface (from contractual limitations imposed by the film industry if I read right). The Netflix Windows 10 app seems to have the same limitation;
- Speakers are ok. Obviously lacking in bass mainly;
- OSD seems to be at 480p resolution;
- Good 802.11AC reception (also has an Ethernet jack).
- Fast refresh (120Hz) "go to black" trick is good for gaming (and is enbaled automatically in "Gaming" picture mode) but don't make the mistake of leaving it in "Gaming" mode when using it with static images, as you can see the flicker, mostly when large bright areas are involved. So, for computer use, just select "Computer" picture mode to quickly optimize the image and disable this feature.)
The remote is a little flimsy and my first was DOA but replaced promptly by the seller (OpenBox.ca). Still, the button feel is not conducive to quick manipulation (it sometimes doesn't take the button presses). And most of the specialized buttons couldn't be mapped when trying to use a universal remote instead.
Note that these apps may be updated at any time, and all this information about them is subject to change. This review was submitted on Feb. 15, 2017.
The TV updates are automatic (no menu choice to manually update).
Before the TV arrived, I had already decided to switch out my (2012) 55LM6400 LG TV in our family room for the Vizio. I wanted to get a good feel for the TV, in most or all scenario's.
The physical appearance of this unit is nice; it has a thin profile and sleek black edges. While moving the unit (and being very careful), the screen came away from the frame in a top corner. Oops! that's not supposed to happen... I'm not sure if this is just my unit, but it's something to watch for and be cautious about. After moving the TV and turning it on, it appeared to have no adverse effects from it.
The remote is handy; I like the Netflix button because I subscribe to it. Overall I do wish they had invested a little more cash into the remote. The buttons feel cheap, but they do work! Which is what counts in the end. I don't think I'll have an issue, it's only used by adults.
Turning the TV on and setting it up was easy, the hard part was remembering my WiFi password! I have an AC dual bandwidth router. I set it up on my 5GHz band. There's far too many 2.4GHz signals around my home, but no one has 5GHz running. The signal for 5GHz is pretty decent. All of my electronics have a bad signal while I'm in my bedroom, but this TV gets a moderate signal. It's definitely better then my handheld devices & WiFi Blu-ray player.
The only app that I use is Netflix. It plays everything smoothly, no lag or stutter. I also love that the app mirrors the PlayStation app for Netflix. It's smooth running, easy to look at & use. Most of the apps are US based; sadly the app selection for Canadians is lacking. I tried using Yahoo News but it never works, it usually just gives me errors.
The general settings were easy to play with. I like the fact that I can totally turn off the TV's speakers in the audio settings. So regardless of you clicking volume up or down, the TV will tell you the speakers are off. This is a handy feature if you're using an external speaker system. I also like that I can name each connection on the TV, that way when I'm flipping through the inputs, I actually don't have to memorize which HDMI port the PS4 is connected to (as an example) You have to play with the settings, as you do with all new TVs. It can be frustrating, but you'll get your 'right picture'. It actually took me a few days of watching and tweaking before I found what I liked. Which leads me to...
The picture, it's fantastic! The blacks are nice and deep and the details are very crisp. However, if the screen is viewed on too much of an angle (right or left side), everything goes bright white and you can't see everything clearly anymore. It occurred to me, I could have this issue because of MY 'right picture' settings. I took the time to read other online reviews for this TV; there are reports of weird viewing angles. Not many, but definitely a few. When I had several people gathered in my family room (during my testing time), they all noticed it and weren't happy. I live in a long narrow home, so most viewing is on angles. Especially if I want to view the TV from my kitchen. I've provided a photo of netflix, straight on and from an angle. The brightness isn't so bad, but when watching sports outside? Brutal! I've never had this issue on my LG. I really don't want to change my settings; to see if the settings are the issue. It took (what felt like) forever to finally find what I liked! (looking at it straight on) I provided a face on and side angle of Netflix to show some of the effect.
When 4K TVs started showing up, I remember reading reports of lag with sports and video games. One thing I can say is, I haven't noticed that with this TV. The game's I tested were all single player. In both sports and gaming, this TV preforms very well.
Tested the screen with:
Sports (in general, we watch them all)
Everyday Satellite TV
Uncharted 4: A thief's end (PS4)
Dragon Age Inquisition (PS4)
Assassins Creed II (PS3)
Netflix (through TV app)
Antenna
I decided to get a wall mount. It's going in my bedroom for the long haul, and I really wanted to free up space on the top of my dresser. I also wanted to see it clearly from all angles. I had hoped that the screws for the legs would also fit the VESA screw holes. Nope :( They're to skinny & to long. This Vizio 50" TV is VESA 200x200. And you'll need M6x20 sized screws. I tried M6x25 screws, but they were a little too long.
Over all this TV is a fantastic value. I would definitely recommend it, especially if you have a full motion mount to suit your surroundings/settings! I hope this helps!
UPDATE July 13:
I just installed an indoor amplified antenna on this. I live in Alliston ON, surrounded by farm land and I wanted to take full advantage of the TV! It's working great and set up was very simple. I only got one channel, CTV two Barrie which is great, it broadcasts in 1080i and looks beautiful. I have this channel with my satellite subscription but not in HD. I'm loving it so far!

Out of the box the colour was very poor, dynamic zone backlighting distracting, and the default sharpening settings (when fed with digital sources) were quite extreme. Colour calibration, disabling the zone feature, ensuring you don't turn on the 30->60hz scaling option (which causes noticeable flicker), and turning sharpening (both edge and block) to their minimum values make this a worthy device for both video (typical television) or computer use. It's a pretty amazing deal, if you go in knowing of these initial shortcomings.
Updated December 2019: It's finally failed; the high-voltage capacitors powering the backlight plane have failed in most of the right half, in 1/8th stripes, one after another over the course of this last year. Very clearly boiled/failed power capacitors. They pulse; clearly building up a charge to some trigger point, then discharging, finally doing their job, before those segments go dark again. I'm actually quite satisfied with the lifespan given the relative cost/value at the time and the duration of my somewhat abusive use. Still, my next will be a Samsung costing about the same as my depreciated Vizio, with half the weight. (Thanks, Moore's law!)
