First, I wanted to explain why I made my decision to purchase. I purchased the regular Hopper when I got my service because I didn't meet the credit requirements. I DID notice that, instead of a brand new one, I was pretty certain that the tech gave me a used unit out of his truck. It seemed to work right but, right after the tech left, I noticed that I was only getting mono (not even stereo). So, if you purchase your Hopper from Dish, make sure they bring you a brand new one.
I called Dish back immediately and had the guy come back and change out the unit. All seemed well again, but I continued to have little issues here and there and, at some point, I had them come out again and replace that unit. I continued to notice little quirks with each unit they brought.
So, while talking to customer support 1 day, I also noticed on my bill that it no longer said I owned my own equipment. It seems that once they change out a unit, you have to make sure they transfer ownership to the new unit because they don't keep track of it.
Somewhere along the way, the Sling unit I purchased from Dish went out too, and since I was going to have to replace that anyway, it made sense to just buy a new unit.
I purchased the "Hopper with Sling" and I couldn't be happier. The unit has worked flawlessly ever since I installed it. All I had to do was plug it in and call Dish to register it. I purchased the unit from Reeder Electronics. They were local to the area so I called them, just to make sure it was legit. It was, and I talked to the owner, a real nice guy. I was so happy, I also purchased the new "Super Joey" (SJ) AND had them come out and install it. The Joey has 2 tuners in it, so now I can record 8 shows at a time when using PTA (i.e. Prime Time Anywhere). That's 4 PTA shows, and 1 show on each of the remaining tuners (2 on the Hopper, and 2 on the Super Joey).
I even figured out that I could turn off the PTA on nights that didn't have anything I wanted to see on it so, on those nights, I have all 5 tuners at my disposal, so I never have an instance where I don't have a tuner to record on. Both, the Hopper with Sling and the SJ can have (I believe) up to 3-2TB external drives connected simultaneously, so, in total, I could have 16TB of recording to choose from. Awesome, just awesome!
This unit replace my Hopper/sling which had a failed Hard-Drive. Bad news I lost all my recordings. I purchased this unit to replace the failed hopper. It seemed to be a new unit and came with the latest software and a newer remote. It took a little learning but I am complety satified I thought the refurbished meant just that so I got the extended warranty (4 years) however this unit is new and I am really happy with it. I have a Wally in my RV and the format is the same so I don't have to relearn the remote each time I go on the Road. This is a great buy and Dish Supports it as if you made purchase from Dish and very easy to install. It auto loads a install menu step by step and takes a little patience and time so you need a Tech visit.
Get your equipment from Dish Network because they will not authorize and activate sevice on equipment purchased elsewhere. Tried calling every Dish network phone number and customer service I could find but every one of them asked why I bought the equipment when it's free with installation and activation of an account with them. They would come out and install one of their systems if I would take the one I purchased from an Amazon seller out. Just a big waste of time and money.
Purchased this to replace VIP722k after seeing good reviews in the internet. Decided to purchase instead of signing two year contract because we watch mostly hindi shows.
Followed steps to install: Disconnected all wires from VIP 722 Connected hopper to single cable coming from dish on roof and HDMI cable to TV Turned the power on and followed steps on the screen (received problem signal due to cloud, but able to cancel). Connected remaining wires as directed on screen.
Connected external hard drive (ehd) . Did not respond. Called technical support. Not able to resolve with technical support.Left the hard drive in place overnight and it is working now (viola!). Looks like technical staff was not aware of this solution.
Logged in to my account in internet and selected cheapest package ($10/mo), local channels ($6/mo) plus Hindi package.
Now I can watch recorded shows in the EHD and also everything is working great.I will be able to recover cost of the unit in 6 months.
This is a very good sat. DVR box. It is quick, displays a good picture, and has nice features. I will not go into to much detail about these topics as many online reviews are already available via google search. I will say that the DVR recordings are displayed in a thumbnail type way, kind of like looking at a folder of pictures on the computer...I love the thumbnails, I have a 3 year old toddler and he looks at the pictures and it helps him to pick out a show to watch, very helpful.........dish seems to have good customer service...only thing, I wish dish had Disney jr. And PBS sprout...I may eventually switch to directv to get these channels in the future, only reason I haven't yet is because I like dish's hopper box better, of course I have never used directv's equipment at all, but looking it up online, it does not appear as good to me.....and of special note: the seller, reiderelectronics, was very helpful and highly recommended!
